The Complete Laboratory Storage Guide

Good laboratory storage is less about buying more containers and more about designing a system you can repeat. Start by grouping items by how often you reach for them, then assign each group a fixed home on the bench or in a drawer.

Rigid, gasket-sealed boxes protect against dust and humidity, which are the two most common causes of degraded labels and corroded fittings. Where possible, choose boxes with a printed grid so every slot has an address you can reference in your log.

Label everything twice: once on the container and once on the shelf position. When a container leaves the shelf, the gap tells you what is missing at a glance. Cryo-safe labels survive temperature swings that ordinary paper labels cannot.

Finally, review the system quarterly. Remove anything that has not been touched in six months, re-print faded labels, and confirm every seal still closes cleanly.
